Musicology

Musicology may be pursued as the main discipline within the Bachelor of Music Studies program (including to Honours level). Musicology in its various forms may also be pursued for the research degrees of Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy. Staff within or associated with the Conservatorium are able to supervise at these higher levels in a relatively wide range of fields, including: Analysis, Aesthetics, Ethnomusicology, Performance Practice, Popular Music, and Historical Musicology.

At undergraduate level there are opportunities to take elective courses in some of these fields, and this provides a route for those who may wish gradually to focus on a particular field of specialisation.

The Elder Music Library is well equipped to support work in the various branches of musicology. It subscribes to a wide range of specialist journals and has an extensive back collection of journals. It subscribes to the on-line and the ‘hard’ versions of RILM, as well as to Music Index and the International Index of Music Periodicals. Students and staff are also able to make use of the Elder Music Library’s on-line subscription to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001) which can be accessed from any computer terminal within the university.

Staff of the Conservatorium have research interests in; Aesthetics, Analysis, Composition, Japanese Music, Polish Music, Australian Indigenous Music, Music Criticism, Music Education, Contemporary Australian Music, Legrenzi, Lutoslawski, Messiaen, Boulez, Satie, Electro-acoustic Music, and Electronic Music.
